Parsons Skatepark On the Way

According to the Parsons Advocate, Sunrise Construction poured 62 yards of concrete in the Pulp Mill Bottom, starting the process for a new skatepark.  They will be placing ramps down eventually on this concrete pad, but when it will open I do not know.  The park has been made available by a federal grant by way of the national Park Service through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and a matching 25,000 dollars from the Harman fund.

More on Parsons Skatepark

I think I should help out Parsons with their skatepark, not only for the sake of getting a better park, but also to help me better understand how these things work.  If Parsons is getting a pre-fab skatepark, could we maybe get it up the way a skater would?  Or could we help make sure good ramps are bought, not just the simplest ones.  All in all, what is the plan, and how can I better the cause.

Questions

I have been on the mission of getting a skatepark built.  Parsons, the county seat of Tucker County, has been given money towards building a skatepark.  I am now wondering whether or not to get involved.  Should I concentrate my efforts on my town or Parsons?  I will let you know what happens.

West Virginia

"There are people who don't like the idea of skateparks." -public skatepark develpoment guide
What I need are skaters who can help me with the organization of the Blackwater Skatepark.  I envision it being along the river in Davis, and therefor giving it the name of Blackwater.  Any skaters interested can email me at jmcshredder@gmail.com There will be a skatepark in Tucker County, West Virginia one day, more specifically, in Davis, and it is up to us to do it.  We may encounter those who oppose the idea of such a thing in their town, but the kids need this. The kids need a good place to gather and skateboard.  We all need a skatepark.  The Canaan Valley State Park has som pre-fab ramps; "its a new park but it lacks the park part. Its ramps are new but its set up sucks it was supposed to be built by skaters but you can tell they just set it all out in no order. I usally dont like skatewave ramps but the ramps there make them look awesome. If you have skated the stairsets nearby already and are mega bored check it out for yourself."  A review from Concrete Disciples done by a skater who found the only skatepark in Tucker County.  Even Parsons is supposed to be building one, with grant money.  A concrete pad will be poured, and more pre-fab ramps?  Maybe.  City Council has agreed to give $25,000 to the new skatepark, and they hope for $50,000 for a water conservation grant.  They are saying it will take only six weeks to complete when started.  It will have a solid concrete riding surface and obstacles, and thats all I know.  I do not think Jason Myers of Parsons wants a good skatepark, simply something to appease the urge to have one.  We can do something more up in Davis.  A top of the line all concrete park that competes with those around the country.
  See ya later.

Putting it Forward

I have the Public Skatepark Developement Guide, Handbook for Skatepark Advancement.  I am starting to read the bible of skatepark campaigning, and I also messaged Rob Dyrdek, a sick skater who has helped to get parks built.  In the future, we shall rip, in mad style, the fresh concrete of Davis's new skatepark!

All Skied Out.

Check out this snowboard video.  http://www.youtube.com/user/Zumiez?v=vsrKCF4dSiQ

After skiing up the mountain twice on Sunday, we did it again yesterday, making powder turns on Weiss Knob.  Today, if we are not too tired, we will get back up there to catch some lasting snow.

So Cold

It is 23 degrees Fahrenheit and snowing.

These days of sun and warmth are just as memory in the mind.
Perhaps we will stand upon substantial amounts of snow, and start sliding.  Check in for winter wonderland wickedness.

Pine Ridge Skatepark

On October 15th, 2011 the Wounded Knee Four-Directions Toby Eagle Bull Memorial Skatepark opened on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.  Toby Eagle Bull picked up skateboarding in High School and skated through college.  He envisioned having a skatepark built in Pine Ridge, but died in a car accident in 2002.  The skatepark is dedicated to him.
The park was constructed by Grindline, and it took 55,000 dollars.  There at the grand opening was Tony Hawk, Pearl Jam's bass player Jeff Ament who skated with the kids, and Vans "Off the Wall" Montana Pool service to capture the moments of the day.
The focus of the day was of instilling hope in kids and realize that an essential venue for youth to play had been providedThe skatepark is the best on the rez, and in South Dakota and possibly surrounding states.  During the day was spoken word and music, and a sense of connection between main-stream skate culture and Lakota culture.

Snowed In

We got snowed in all week up here in Tucker County, West Virginia.  With 2-3 feet of snow, we got into some fun.  Athey had to shovel some snow off his roof so he went ahead and made some jibs.  After a candle-lit night around the open fire place, we woke up to make super strong coffee and start jumping off the roof.  A bunch of snow lingers, and hopefully more will bless us soon.

Skate in the Snow

It has been dumping snow all day.  Tonight more, and in the morning we will wake up and go play.  Sliding on it, with skis, snowboards, and sleds.  Snow Skates are cool to skid around and hit jumps.  They are a skateboard deck made for the snow, and make for a pretty good challenge doing tricks.  Until then, no fresh shots of anything.  Just keeping alive in the storm of the storms, 2012.
