On October 15th, 2011 the Wounded Knee Four-Directions Toby Eagle Bull Memorial Skatepark opened on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. Toby Eagle Bull picked up skateboarding in High School and skated through college. He envisioned having a
skatepark built in Pine Ridge, but died in a car accident in 2002.
The skatepark is dedicated to him.
The park was constructed by Grindline, and it took 55,000 dollars. There at the grand opening was Tony Hawk, Pearl Jam's bass player Jeff Ament who skated with the kids, and Vans "Off the Wall" Montana Pool service to capture the moments of the day.
The focus of the day was of instilling hope in kids and realize that an essential venue for youth to play had been provided. The skatepark is the best on the rez, and in South Dakota and possibly surrounding states. During the day was spoken word and music, and a sense of connection between main-stream skate culture and Lakota culture.
